Wild Wacky Weather

Hey Toto, I don't think we are in Kansas anymore.

Wow tornado warnings for two days now. I was teaching a photography class at CCBC and the sirens went off. We all had to take shelter. Very spooky how quickly the sky went black.

2011 Susan G. Komen Grant Awards

What a great event. Such a positive message. This is the second year that Bayline Studios and Robbie McLean Photography have been involved with the Race for the Cure. Look for Team Bayline for Boobies at this years race!

A Day in DC

A great day in DC, as the crew took in the 2011 Cherry Blossom Festival, and then migrated down to Dulles International to the Air and Space Museum.

Get Blue Skies in your photos

This is a great time of year to practice your outdoor photo skills, and hone them for the Spring, Summer and Fall months ahead.

To get great colors in your shots on a sunny day, there are a few rules and tricks.

1. Try shooting earlier in the day, before Noon. Earlier in the day is better because the light is softer and more diffused.

2. Try shooting later in the day. Use the "Golden Hours". Just before sunset, to about 1/2-an hour after. You will get some ethereal qualities to your photos.

3. Sunny 16. Use a narrow aperture of F-16, and a shutter speed of 100, at 100 ISO. Of course your camera needs to be on manual settings. You can use F-11, 14, and 18, depending on your camera.

4. Use a lens hood to keep sun flare and unwanted light reaching the light meter to a minimum.

5. Experiment and have fun!

A Day at the Washington's

Wow what a difference a couple of days makes!

Just last weekend it was sunny with a high of almost 70'. Today we have 5 inches of snow! Over the weekend, Heather and I ventured down to Mount Vernon, to George Washington" beloved home. Great photo opps. I suggest getting there right as they open, so that you can take your time, and not be rushed through the mansion.

Cold day on the Chesapeake

I love shooting at night. There are so many challenges and ways of using light. This shot was taken in sub-freezing temps and high winds. I cannot overstate the value of a sturdy tripod for long exposures.

Capital City Colonials

My love of American History has led me to join a colorful band of folks in Annapolis.

Capital City Colonials of Annapolis gives guided tours of historic points of interest pertaining to the 18th century Annapolis.

Annapolis has the most still in use buildings from the 1700's in a mile radius. The State House for one, which actually served as our nations capital. It is also where George Washington resigned his commission as commander in chief of the army and became a civilian.

Here we are at a recent function for "New Annapolitans" a sort of welcome wagon for new members of the community.

2010 was quite a year here at Bayline.

We weathered a cancer scare, became involved with Susan G. Komen as a photography affiliate, met a great friend who is now onboard as a partner, became a professor of photography, and received preferred vendor status fr a number of Baltimore venues.

Our new Website is also in the works. It will be easier to navigate and have quite a few new offerings. Stop by and visit towards the end of January.

December has been quite a cccccold and busy month for the crew at Bayline.

We are gearing up for next year, with some new offerings and promotions. Our corporate team building and events packages will be up soon.

Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure

Bayline Studios is privileged to be part of the photography committee for Komen Maryland.

The event was a huge hit, raising over 30 Million dollars for the fight against breast cancer.

On Assignment in Colorado

Wow, for a beach guy, I am slowly falling in love with the beauty of Colorado. Have been out several times in several seasons and conditions, but this time was different. I really felt a connection. reminds me of what naturalist John Muir once said. "The mountains are calling me, I must answer". He the beach is only 1 1/2 hours by plane right?

Baltimore Guitarist Group

Wow! This weekend we celebrated the Baltimore Guitarist Groups 3rd Anniversary.

The Red Eye Yacht Club in Essex were amazing hosts. There was electric, acoustic, classic rock, blue grass, you name it. Yours truly was on the blonde Fender Telecaster. A great time was had by all.

Summer Photo Tips

A few tips on great Summer Photos.

1. Try to shoot earlier in the day, before 9 AM. The light is softer and the colors are more vibrant.

2. Shooting at mid day when nthe sun is at it's strongest yeilds flat washed out photos. Wait a few hours until around 4 or 5 PM.

3. For beautiful color shoot during the "Golden Hours", right before and right after sunset. Everything will have a warm and pleasant glow.

4. When shooting family or friends in bright sun, try different angles, so that they are not always staring into the sun. Try side lighting, backlighting for anice silhouette effect. Also for shots where they are facing into the sun, have everyone look at you and then with their eys only, look down. Count to 3 and have them raise their eyes only to your level. Bang, everyone has their eyes open.

5. Use fill flash. Yes it sounds funny to add more light on a bright sunny day. But if all you have is a pop up flash, it is better than nothing. What it does is even out the hot spots and shadows on the face. You know, those raccoon eyes, yuk!

6. Use natural shade if you can to soften the light. Avoid getting directly below tree branches, as the sun can filter through the leaves and branches, and cast funky shadows on the subject. An overhang, porch, awning all work great.

Try these simple tips and you will be very surprised at the results. Happy shooting!

BSO Fireworks

BSO 4th of July concert and fireworks. Great family fun. Shots taken with my wife's little point and shoot. She likes it, but I still feel naked without my 70-200mm, 16-35mm, 24-105mm and my 5D MK II, 50D, and 7D bodies. :)

Frampton / Yes Concert Pier 6

The Peter Frampton / Yes concert at Pier 6 last week was awesome!
The good folks at Urban Pirates had some of the best seats in the house. If you have never sailed with them, you are missing out on a great time for all. All cruises are age appropriate and specialize in everything from school groups to corporate events.
